Black Sabbath ~ “Paranoid

Make a joke and I will sigh
And you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel
And love to me is so unreal
And so as you hear these words
Telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life
I wish I could but it’s too late…

lyrics

I was able to catch the stream of Back to the Beginning the other day. I wanted to watch it, and pay some respect to Black Sabbath. The fact that all of the original members of Black Sabbath are still alive is amazing, but for all of them to be on the stage one last time and still bring it in their late 70s… 🤘🔥

No, it wasn’t the same as seeing Sabbath live ~ but it was enough to scratch the itch and reminisce.

Why Paranoid?

Sabbath’s catalog is stacked, Sometimes its hard to pick one track.

I was surprised by Yungblud’s cover of Changes earlier in the day ~ and for a minute, I almost went with the original. The entire crowd chanting to “Iron Man” was siiick (I was full Beevis & Butthead).

But when it comes to Sabbath, I always come back to “Paranoid.”

It’s been that way since I was a kid.

Tony Iommi’s riff.
Geezer Butler’s lyrics.
Ozzy’s voice.
All of it surging forward like Bill Ward’s bass drum kicking you in the chest.

It’s a 2:58 energy shot.

A change agent.

Whenever I’ve needed to break trend ~ whether in sports, work, or life ~ I either play Paranoid in my headphones, or you could hear me humming it as I gave the middle finger to inertia.
A sonic reset.

And it still works.
Every. Time.

Paranoid wasn’t meant to be iconic ~ it was written quickly to fill time on the album.

A metal song about mentals.

And yet it became the name of the album, a top 10 hit, and the song they always close with.

Minimal. Relentless. Timeless.

🔥🤘 Black Sabbath 🤘🔥

Throwback Thursday: The Police ~ “Message in a Bottle”
Released in 1979, this post-punk/reggae classic became The Police’s first #1 UK hit. Stewart Copeland’s crisp hi-hat and snare work drive the track — a song about loneliness, connection, and sonic precision.

OSW: DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince ~ “Summertime”

“Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince is more than a song — it’s a seasonal anthem. With smooth flows and a nostalgic Kool & The Gang sample, it captures the feeling of summer better than almost any other track. A Fourth of July playlist essential.
