Can I Kick it?…

A Tribe Called Quest ~ “Can I Kick It?” (1990)

“If you feel the urge to freak, do the jitterbug
Come and spread your arms if you really need a hug”

Earlier this week, I revisited the iconic Yo! MTV Raps Unplugged episode that aired on May 1, 1991. The performances by LL Cool JDe La Soul, and MC Lyte were straight fire – but the moment “Can I Kick It?” hit, it was over. That bassline dropped, and just like that, the track was back in my head. Living rent-free. Vibing on repeat.

That smooth “Walk on the Wild Side” groove. The hypnotic rhythm. The effortless call-and-response. More than a song—it’s a feeling.

A Tribe Called Quest perfected that blend of jazz, soul, and laid-back brilliance, and this track is a shining example.

It’s deceptively simple—fun, open, full of space—but it lands like a deep breath and a warm hug every time it drops.

“Can I Kick it?

Yes You Can!”

Samples:

Lou Reed ~ “Walk on the Wild Side

Lonnie Smith ~ “Spinning Wheel

Throwback Thursday: The Police ~ “Message in a Bottle”
Released in 1979, this post-punk/reggae classic became The Police’s first #1 UK hit. Stewart Copeland’s crisp hi-hat and snare work drive the track — a song about loneliness, connection, and sonic precision.

TBT: Black Sabbath ~ “Paranoid”

“Paranoid” wasn’t supposed to be the hit ~ it was written fast, almost as filler. But over five decades later, Black Sabbath’s raw, relentless track still defines heavy metal. A 2:58 energy shot that never misses.
